Growing Conditions & Care:
- Position: Thrives in full sun to light shade.
- Soil: Highly adaptable, including in wet and compacted soils, making it excellent for difficult urban sites.
- Maintenance: Requires caution near infrastructure as it has vigorous, deep roots that can disturb pipes and paths. It requires maintenance in smaller gardens due to leaf, bark, and seed ball litter.
- Hazards: The fine hairs on leaves and seeds can cause allergic reactions.
Uses In The Garden:
- Large-Scale Shade Tree: Ideal for wide, open spaces and large residential landscapes, providing a dense canopy of shade.
- Avenues and Driveways: Highly effective for lining long driveways or as a street tree, with high tolerance to urban pollution.
- Feature/Specimen Tree: The mottled, flaking bark of grey, cream, and olive provides dramatic year-round winter interest.
- Pollard/Topiary: It can be heavily pruned or pollarded annually to manage its significant size
