Growing Conditions & Care:
Light: Prefers full sun to partial shade
Soil: Requires moist, well-drained soil that is neutral to slightly acidic. It is adaptable and can tolerate heavy clay soils if necessary, though good drainage is crucial to prevent root rot.
Water: Needs moderate watering during its first year or two to get established. Once established, it is notably drought-tolerant, requiring supplemental water only during prolonged dry spells.
Fertiliser: Feed annually in early spring with a general-purpose, slow-release fertilizer or a layer of well-rotted organic matter/compost around the base.
Pruning: Pruning is generally not required for health but can be done after flowering to maintain shape or size. Be aware that flowers form on old growth, so heavy pruning may reduce the following season’s bloom.
Uses in the garden:
- Widely cultivated in gardens and parks for its attractive foliage and remarkable scent. It makes an excellent hedge, screen, or container plant.
