Growing Conditions & Care:
- Bark: Unlike the peeling bark of many birches, this species has non-peeling, chalky white bark featuring dark, triangular, chevron-shaped patches below each branch base.
- Foliage: Shiny green, long-pointed, triangular, double-toothed leaves that turn yellow in the fall.
- Height/Spread: Typically 20–40 ft (6–12m) high with a spread of 8–15 ft (2.5–4.5m).
- Habit: Often grows with a narrow, pyramidal, or multi-trunked habit.
- Site Preference: Thrives in full sun or partial shade. It is highly adaptable to various soil types (clay, sand, loam) and handles wet or dry, poor soil conditions better than many other birch species.
- Hardiness: Typically hardy in zones 2-6.
- Maintenance: Generally easy to grow but prefers consistent moisture.
- Pests: Shows some resistance to the bronze birch borer (BBB), a common birch pest, though it can still be affected.
Uses In The Garden:
- Landscape Use: Excellent for small spaces, urban environments, or as a feature tree, often planted in groups to create a naturalistic woodland effect.
