Growing Conditions & Care:

  • Foliage: New growth in spring is a bright red-bronze colour, with mature leaves being dark, leathery green.
  • Flowers: Produces dense clusters of small, white flowers in spring, which have a strong, somewhat unpleasant fragrance.
  • Size: Generally grows to a height of 3–5 metres, but is often kept as a 1.5–4 metre hedge.
  • Growth Rate: Fast-growing, with the ability to add 50cm or more of growth per year.

Uses In The Garden:

  • Screening/Hedging: Its dense habit makes it ideal for privacy screens. Plant 60–80cm apart for a quick, thick hedge.
  • Specimen Plant: Can be grown as a large shrub or trained into a small, ornamental tree.
  • Topiary: It is commonly used for formal shaping, including standard “lollipop” trees.
