Growing Conditions & Care:
- Appearance: Features large, leathery, glossy green leaves with a dense growth habit. In spring, it produces clusters of small, fragrant white flowers, followed by small red berries that turn black.
- Uses: Ideal for tall privacy screens, hedging (can be kept at 1.2m to 3m+), and as a structural feature shrub.
- Growth Rate: Fast-growing, capable of establishing quickly to create a dense screen.
- Size: Can reach a mature height of 5 to 8 metres, but is usually maintained around 2 to 4 metres through pruning.
Uses In The Garden:
- Privacy Screens and Hedges: Its dense, fast-growing nature makes it one of the best choices for quickly creating privacy screens, tall, narrow screens, or boundary hedges, sometimes reaching a 2-meter screen in roughly 14 months.
- Large Background Planting: It serves as a great backdrop for, or “green screen” for, smaller flowering annuals, perennials, or colorful shrubs like Azaleas and Gardenias.
- Small Trees/Specimen Trees: When left unpruned, it can be grown as a multi-stemmed feature tree.
- Container Gardening: It can be grown in large pots to add privacy to balconies or patios.
- Windbreaks: Its thick, robust foliage provides an excellent barrier against strong winds.
- Scented Gardens: The flowers produce a strong, sweet scent in spring.
