Growing Conditions & Care:
- Appearance: A dense, upright shrub or small tree with leathery, oval-shaped dark green leaves and red-brown branches.
- Foliage/Flowers: It bears small, yellowish-white flowers in spring, which can develop into small black/purple berries.
- Size: While it can grow up to 10–20 meters in its native habitat, it is usually maintained as a 3–6 meter plant in gardens and is easily kept much smaller in containers.
- Hardiness: Drought and frost-tolerant once established, it is also suitable for coastal locations.
Uses In The Garden:
- Culinary: The fragrant leaves are used fresh or dried in soups, stews, and sauces.
- Topiary/Ornamental: Due to its tolerance for pruning, it is an ideal candidate for formal topiary (cones, balls), hedging, and screening.
- Container Gardening: Its slow-growing nature makes it excellent for growing in large pots, tubs, or along patios
